The UK’s premier colour book printer, Butler Tanner & Dennis can today announce an investment in new machinery with the installation of the first XL162 Heidelberg printing press in the UK. The new press is part of an on-going investment plan that will provide clients with the highest quality products within a quick timeframe of printing services in the UK serving the book, map and publishing markets.
The Heidelberg XL162 has a running speed of 15,000 sheets per hour and; after the initial make ready, subsequent make readies are no more than 15 minutes. It also has the capability for aqueous coating, allowing each sheet to be coated in varnish, enhancing the finishing effect of each page. The press also has a Princept Inpress Colour Control System, allowing adjustments of colour on the machine to be made automatically rather than manually.
Kevin Sarney, MD of Butler Tanner & Dennis, said: “This is an important time for Butler Tanner & Dennis. We aim to provide clients with services that keep control over the cost of their supply chain for their colour printed products, eliminating waste or risk from the chain by bringing manufacture closer to the market. This investment is a clear step forward in this direction. The speed at which we can deliver their products is key to ensure they maximise the sales potential without the risk of waste or overstocking, the trend to shorter run lengths and reprinting more frequently is a reflection of the demand for this type of press. This investment positions Butler Tanner & Dennis at the leading edge to deliver this type of service.”
The UK colour book printing industry has seen substantial changes over the past 10 years, with increased competition for printing overseas and the emergence of e-books and other technology affecting the traditional book market. Butler Tanner & Dennis has invested £6.5 million over the last three years since Felix Dennis rescued the business. The company has rebuilt its operational capability over that period, successfully winning contracts including the production of the Ordnance Survey Maps for the next 4 years. Its services now include a Fine Art and Digital division as well as having partnerships in the USA and China. The opportunity to meet the changing demands of colour book supply market remains core to the business’s investment programme.
Felix Dennis, the sole owner of Butler Tanner & Dennis, will officially open the press to live production with Chairman Sir Robin Miller and MD Kevin Sarney on Thursday 23rd June in Frome.
Butler Tanner & Dennis, the UK’s premier colour book printer, can today announce its success in printing “William & Catherine: the Royal Wedding Album” (Carlton Books, RRP £14.99) in a very quick time frame time to meet demand following the Royal Wedding.
Butler Tanner & Dennis worked closely with publisher Carlton Books to ensure the lavishly illustrated, 144-page hardback book was on bookshelves less than one week after the wedding.
The publisher worked against the clock to prepare print-ready files that were delivered to the Somerset-based printer in the early hours of Saturday 30th April, less than 24 hours after the big event. Print teams worked through the night to get the books printed, bound and delivered just five days later, on Thursday 5th May.
James Longman, Key Accounts at Butler Tanner & Dennis, said: “It was a pleasure to produce such a patriotic book in the UK. This project is a real display of how Butler Tanner & Dennis’s UK-based factory allows our clients to print quality books at high speed, yet still remaining cost-effective”.
The book, written by Ian Lloyd, is published by Carlton Books in association with ITV.
Butler Tanner & Dennis, the UK’s premier colour book printer, can today announce a significant investment in new machinery with the purchase of the first Heidelberg Very Large Format (VLF) press in the UK.
The new Speedmaster XL 162-6+L is a six-colour press with coater that will be delivered to the Frome based printer in early January 2011. The Speedmaster XL press range has already established itself as a proven peak performance technology which has been extended into the very largest sheetfed formats. The XL 162 is Heidelberg’s largest press. Two key tools on the Butler Tanner & Dennis press are the Fully Automatic two minute plate change and Inpress Control, a spectrophotometer which automatically sets the colour and register of the job, reducing set-up times and paper waste at the start of production. Inpress Control also measures and maintains colour throughout the job, ensuring the colour is absolutely consistent throughout a print run. The press complements an investment programme to revamp Butler Tanner & Dennis’s printing and binding capability.

As a leading colour book printer, Butler Tanner & Dennis relies upon the continued support of its publishing clients and their need for a high quality UK based supplier. It is for this reason that, in partnership with them, they have created a new brand initiative entitled, “Great British Books” to promote British Publishing and Book Manufacture.
The concept was created to give credit and acknowledgement to the publishing industry for supporting UK book manufacture. The aim is also to make consumers more aware of where their book is produced.
